Don’t know my own strength


“Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The Lord brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.” Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!”
Judges 6:13-14 NLT

There was a pop song in the sixties which had the line ‘You don’t know know what you’ve got till it’s gone’ and it’s true. I have so much and I don’t know it. Gideon didn’t know that God was with him. He didn’t know that he had any power. Yet the angel said that he had the power to rescue Israel.

How much more could I do if I realised how much strength I have? How much more can I achieve if I can only remember the source of that strength? After all, I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength!



‘Let the people of Meroz be cursed,’ said the angel of the Lord . ‘Let them be utterly cursed, because they did not come to help the Lord — to help the Lord against the mighty warriors.’
Judges 5:23 NLT

Being a Christian isn’t a spectator sport – it’s an activity, a lifestyle. Work has to be done, work that helps the Lord. Yes, God can do all things but sometimes He wants me to help Him and I have to be ready and willing to help.

Word to the wise


Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.
Proverbs 12:18 NLT

A ministry of healing would be a wonderful ability to have. Think how good it would be to go round making people better! I think I have wanted that ever since I became a Christian.

And here is my opportunity. I might not be wise, but I have been given wisdom by being given the truth. A kind word has mended many a heart and because I know the love of Christ, I have the living source of many kind words. Since I know the truth of the Gospel, I am in possession of much wisdom.

So all I need to be wise is at my fingertips. All I need to bring healing is there too!

Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High. Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.
Psalms 50:14-15 NLT

God tells us that his ways are not our ways. It can be seen in this passage.

Our natural way of doing things is really quite selfish: someone does something for us and then we thank him. We might be really polite and say ‘please’ when we want someone to do something for us, but we only say ‘Thank you’ after the event.

In these verses, though, we are told to give thanks, then to ask, then we will receive!

God has done so many things for me, and I have many reasons to thank him, but here he is telling me to thank him for the things he hasn’t yet done and saying that if I do thank him for them beforehand the I shall receive them. Why is that?

It’s called faith!
