I have marvelled at the courage of the people, and there is no doubt that the world has changed dramatically. Twitter, Facebook and the internet in general gave them a “weapon” which was never before possible, and put the world in a place where revolution can take place with scarcely any bloodshed. There is no doubt that the impact which the protest had on the shaky economy also brought pressure to bear, as did the worldwide TV coverage. Thirty years of authoritarian government ended in fewer days.

But that is not what I am astonished at. I am astonished that a man of 82 wanted to cling on to power in the face of such protest. I am amazed that a man of 82 wanted to keep his job. Did he not feel like a rest? It must have been a hard job ruling with such an iron rod for so many years, and he must have been looking over his shoulder all the time. You cannot rule in such a manner for so many years without making an enemy here and there. The pressure must have been fairly intense.

Perhaps it was fear that kept him there. He had spent years ensuring that everyone feared him, then hung on as long as he could because suddenly he feared them.

Or perhaps he was in denial (on de Nile), living under the delusion that he would win in the end.

Whatever the reason, it is over for the people, but I am sure it is not over for him.

I think there are questions of other world leaders too, like why they dealt with him for so long if they knew that his regime was so tough on the people he was supposed to serve. But that is the point, isn’t it? He wasn’t serving the people, and I am sure that at the bottom of the heart of most, perhaps every, world leader, they don’t either. They are in it for the thrill, the prestige, the power. I imagine that few of them are totally selfless, and since they backed Mubarak, they obviously lack a real, true knowledge of justice.

But I know one leader who is not like that. He has proved already that he is totally selfless, and he will rule with justice.

For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His government and its peace will never end.
He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity.
The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
(Isaiah 9:6-7, NLT)

Fairness and justice. Forever.

Yes! He will get my vote!

I have been watching the events in Egypt with astonishment.
